Autumn - "Apple Tree Ridge"

Writer's picture: Kevin RoecklKevin Roeckl

🍁 In honor of Fall, my favorite season 🍁

I’m sharing autumn artworks from my 40-year career, over the next few weeks.

Usually I add landscapes as the backgrounds behind figures. Rarely do I portray a landscape on it’s own. But I loved this autumn view of Apple Tree Ridge from where I was living at that time. Mattole Valley, on the Lost Coast of northern California, 1985.

In the coastal valleys on the West Coast we don't get “Fall color" like mountains and colder regions do. This is what autumn looks like here – dry summer grass and golden hills.

Colored pencil and watercolor landscape with meadow, hillside, and barn on golden-brown Canson Mi-Teintes paper

I used the golden-brown paper color to provide the color of the hillside and under-color for the meadow. The shadows were done with blue watercolor.
