Grisaille
Pronounced greez-EYE
Grisaille is a style of painting in shades of only one color. This is done by using dark and light tones on a mid-tone background. Traditionally grisaille is black and white on a gray background (example at right). Grisaille can also be done in other colors. Shown at left is a canine portrait in dark brown and white on a tan background. The examples below are a young woman in mauve and white on a peach background, and a Buddhist Lama in raspberry red and white on an orange background.
